November 11, 2015 Steven Cinq-Mars “Change Management Standards”

Steven Cliq-Mars

ISM’s November’s Professional Development and Networking event (PD$N) held at The Egg and I in downtown Orlando featured a presentation from Dr. Steve Cinq-Mars ( ) on an emerging international standard from the Association of Change Management Professionals
(ACMP)-The Standard for Change Management®.   Released in September of 2014, the Standard is one of the foundational pillars in establishing and advancing the change management profession.

ACMP’s Standard was developed through a global, voluntary consensus standards development process, consistent with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) practices. Over the course of two years,  ACMP’s Standards Working Group, a volunteer committee of 26 international change management professionals, engaged over 1,100 change management thought leaders and volunteers from 57 countries, each averaging more than 10 years’ experience, to capture, review, adjudicate and respond to more than 3,500 unique comments.

The Standard establishes a common understanding of the discipline of change management to help leaders and practitioners achieve and sustain change objectives.  It outlines generally accepted practices, processes, tasks and activities used by change management practitioners across multiple roles, organizations and industries providing a clear and consistent vocabulary of essential change management terminology.

The Standard contains a full complement of information, including descriptions of scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and concepts organized in five knowledge areas that describe the process groups of similar or related activities. The Standard addresses 5 Key Knowledge areas and their process groups:

  1. Evaluate Change Impact and Organizational Readiness
  2. Formulating Change Management Strategy
  3. Developing Change Management Plans
  4. Executing Change Management Plans
  5. Closing the Change Management Effort

The Standard®, which is freely available on ACMP’s web site (, is the cornerstone of a professional certification program (CCMP™) currently under development and a qualification scheme (QEP™) for training and continuing education courses that align to The Standard and best practices in adult education..

Feel free to download The Standard and learn more about implementing and sustaining change in your organization.
